My take - state sovereignty is a tricky situation and question - a state is only a state if it is recognized as one by others - and in certain situations the questions needs to be centered around why would there be a problem recognizing 'state A' versus not - sports often hits on political issues and I believe this one is flying under the radar but this article could help some understand a complicated issue
